KNITTING UPDATE #39 + #40 | HAND DYEING YARN AND SELLING PROGRESS KEEPERS!

Excuse me while I was being super busy traveling and watching friends get married! I’m typing this intro at the airport in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, because this is the first time since what feels like forever that I’m able to sit down, collect my thoughts, and write an update. One of the perks of planes getting delayed, I suppose. 😉 And in case you are wondering right now: yes, I got my knitting needles through security! So happy, happy day. Now let’s talk about what I accomplished knitting-wise since I last spoke to you (ages ago).

Coffee flatlay

GONNA NEED A LOT MORE OF THAT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS

Classic vest

Can you believe I never knitted a Summer garment before? Well, now I did and I’m so pumped with it! I used a pattern by Jess (@knitspleaseuk), which I had to make quite a lot of modifications to, since I worked with a totally different yarn. So cheers to taking time for pre-casting-on maths, because that was what made this project a success.

San Agústin facecloth gift set

The marriage I talked about had mint green as its theme color, so I decided to knit the happy couple a set of San Agústin facecloths in that color. In the end, I also added their names’ first letters in duplicate stitch, to make it extra personal. Also, I had so much fun packaging this with a handmade business card, can’t wait to do this for a customer once I sell a physical item.

Lucky Star tank

I know I haven’t updated in a while, but on top of that, I was also on a finishing-projects-kick. So I’ve got another one for ya: my Wool and the Gang Lucky Star tank! I’ll write a separate blogpost about it soon, so I won’t go into detail here. I just wanted to say this is probably the most satisfying and awesome yarn I’ve ever knitted with. #drool

Mini basket

I’m totally honored to be one of Megan’s (@darlingbebrave / @darlingbebravedesign) Mini basket crochet pattern testers! Ever since she started making these infamous baskets of hers, I wanted to make one too, so I couldn’t let this opportunity go. Megan’s patterns are always extremely detailed, so making this little one was a breeze. I did have some trouble finding the right yarn though: a super bulky wool/acrylic blend I have in my stash turned out way too bulky, as was the t-shirt yarn I tried next. So I ended up using some sturdy cotton with a smaller hook than the pattern calls for. Totally different, but it worked very well anyway!

I made this basket exactly as the pattern describes, but I will try to make some adjustments to my next one. And then it’s all about writing down my recommendations for Megan. It will mostly be about details, but I know how perfectionistic she is (and so am I, haha), so I’ll just write it all down and then it’s up to her to adjust the pattern as she pleases.

Progress keepers

When it comes to stitch markers and progress keepers, I feel like the market is similar to that of handmade knitwear or handdyed yarn: it’s quite difficult to find something modern and minimalistic. So I decided to order some supplies and make a bunch of progress keepers myself! They are super simple but exactly how I like them: gold and with modern shapes as pendants. And it was quite fun to make them, especially since the boyfriend volunteered to help, haha. I’ll list them in the shop update on October 20th, so if you’re in need of a little enabling, make sure to sign up for my newsletter — I’ll send you a message when the update is live, which will include a discount code. 🙂

Works in progress

Zigzag blanket + pattern

No progress on this one since last time, except for the fact that I started working on the pattern. Even though it’s quite a simple knit, the pattern is super complicated to write down. So bear with me while I find a way to describe it in the most effective way, haha. I did bring seven new balls of Cashsilk with me to Gran Canaria, which is probably still not enough to finish it, but it will keep me going for a while!

El Tablero headband + pattern

The pattern set-up is done, so I hope to knit and photograph its sample headband before the 20th, so it can be listed in the shop update.

Marpha sweater

Oh you guys, I got so much happy mail in The Netherlands, including this sweater kit by We Are Knitters. I’m collaborating with them in order to promote their Les Girls collection, which totally gets me in a cozy Fall mood even though it’s currently 35 degrees C (95F) around here. Anyhow, I started the back panel in The Netherlands and I must say, due to the color work, it’s not a quick or mindless knit. You’re working with five balls of yarn at the same time and it requires some concentration not to get them all tangled up. But the result is awesome, so it sure is a satisfying knit! I casted on and finished a sleeve, which is made in just a single color, during my flight home. While answering all kinds of knitting questions from my (male!) neighbor, haha. It’s good to have people respond genuinely positive to knitting for a change.

Future projects

San Agústin facecloth set

Inspired by the Marpha sweater and my facecloth gift set, I’m contemplating the idea of making a colorwork facecloth set for the shop… Stay tuned.

Hand dyed yarn

YES, this may be the biggest news of this blogpost: I’m going to hand dye yarn! Like I mentioned above, I’m struggling to find knitting supplies that I like, not only to work with, but also to turn into something I’ll (eventually) want to wear. On the yarn front, that means blacks, greys, whites, and maybe some little specks of color. I was totally inspired by older episodes of Kristin’s podcast (@voolenvine), where she just started dyeing yarn. So I was like, whyyyy not!? I ordered all the bare yarn, a few different dyes (black, of course), pots and pans and gloves and everything. Kinda feeling like Heisenberg now, haha. I hope to be dyeing up some test mini skeins soon!

Classic vest #2

I think I’ll use the cotton of my frogged One Stop crop top to redesign and reknit the Classic vest. And when it’s perfect, I may or may not use my hand dyed yarn to knit one for the shop. #exciting #longtermplans

YARN: DROPS COTTON LIGHT UNI // COLOR: JEANS BLUE (#26)

Norderney jumper

Is this pattern ever gonna be knitted? You tell me.

Acquisitions

Too many. That’s actually all I wanna say, because otherwise this is gonna be such an exhaustive segment, haha! Oh well, I’ll leave out the bare yarn for now (I’ll count that in once it’s actually successfully dyed), as well as the giveaway Drops Paris that will soon be on its way to @craftyhandsholly (congrats again)!

We Are Knitters Petite Wool + 8mm needles

I had such a hard time choosing colors this time. On the one hand, I wanted to go with Chain Twenty’s signature “colors”, on the other hand, I wanted to try out something a little bit more out of my comfort zone. I decided to go with a little bit of both: spotted grey (yay!), and peach and nude (eeks!). They are working really well together though, and the stitches fly off the wooden needles that come with the kit. <3

Progress keepers supplies

At first, I was a bit hesitant to share my suppliers for things I’m planning to sell, but you know what — I wanna be totally transparant about these kind of things. In the end, managing a shop, branding a brand, making decisions about what to spend your time and money on, that’s what makes a maker successful (or not, haha). Not where exactly all the supplies come from. Right? Plus, some of my supplies come from fellow makers / small shops, and I want to promote them too! I’m just here to share my journey and I still have no idea if I’m on the right path. Anyway, I searched for gold jewelry supplies on Etsy and ended up spending hours at KJewelryMetal, who sells aaaall the gorgeous things. I got lobster clasps, jump rings, and different types of pendants. I’m afraid I’m addicted now.

Statistics

Yup, my shopping habits have finally caught up on me. I blame the collaborations though. 😉 I’m six skeins of yarn behind schedule and I won’t have a lot of knitting time in the near future. This does make me kind of nervous though, haha, so no new yarn for me anytime soon!

This week’s plans

My Knitting Update schedule is pretty messed up, but I’ll try to get another one up before the shop update next week. It’s all about preparing for that update now, hopefully including some yarn dyeing!
