MAKER UPDATE #6-#9 | GLAD TO BE BACK!

Welcome back y’all! I’ve been on a 3-week hiatus due to traveling, but I’m back, and glad so! For those of you interested, the boyfriend and I went island hopping on the Azores! It was a totally different holiday experience than we were both used to (it included hiking shoes, rain jackets, and back packs #justsayin), but it was ah… wait for it …mazing! Watching too much HIMYM these days, can you tell? This is not the place to share stories and pictures, but check out my personal Instagram account @merelymerel if you’re curious. Anyway, what I’m getting at is that all I did was travel knitting. 😉 BUT it’s also shop update day today, so read on for info about that!

WORKS IN PROGRESS

NORDERNEY JUMPER

Due to my travel project (see below) I now think knitting on 4 mm needles is basically knitting with chunky yarn. So when we got home, I (almost) finished the first sleeve. One more to go and it’s done you guys! Done! Can’t wait.

YARN: DROPS KARISMA MIX // COLOR: DARK BROWN (#056)
NEEDLES: LANA GROSSA VARIO MESSING CIRCULARS + 80 CM CABLE // SIZE: 3 MM, 4 MM
PATTERN: NORDERNEY BY ISABELL KRAEMER

GUERNSEY WRAP

Again, no progress on this one. Intentionally though. Other projects have priority now.

YARN: KATIA BASIC MERINO // COLOR: BEIGE (#09)
THREAD: DROPS GLITTER // COLOR: GOLD (#01)
NEEDLES: PLASTIC STRAIGHTS // SIZE: 4 MM
PATTERN: GUERNSEY WRAP BY JARED FLOOD

SPAGHETTI STRAP TOP

Also no progress here. Together with finishing Norderney, this is on top of my to knit list though, because I wanna write down and publish the pattern before Spring is over ‘:-D.

YARN: CHAIN TWENTY FUERTE DK // COLORWAY: LAS PALMAS
NEEDLES: LANA GROSSA LALA BERLIN CIRCULARS + 80 CM CABLE // SIZE 3.5 MM
PATTERN: SPAGHETTI STRAP TOP (FOR NOW) BY CHAIN TWENTY (FORTHCOMING)

THE EASY ONE JUMPER

I spent days (and nights, to be honest) thinking what project to cast on as a travel project. For travel knitting, I always look for a pattern with simple stitches, that requires light weight yarn, and that’s knit on a needle size that I have in wood / plastic. I couldn’t find the right project and decided to compromise on the last requirement, casting on a jumper on 3 mm messing needles. It’s The Easy One jumper by Joji Locatelli, because the fit looks GREAT and I’ve never knit a pattern by her (shame!).

Of the three security checks I passed with my needles, one went smoothly and two did not, haha. On the overall, knitting needles are allowed on planes, but small aluminium / metal ones obviously look suspicious to security people who don’t see this kind of stuff everyday. So in these two cases, I had to argue with the security guy that “yes, it’s allowed” – “no, it’s not”, “yes, it is, I take them all the time”, “no, it’s not”, “yes, last time I was here, it was okay”, – “no, let me ask my boss, wait a minute”, – “sure”, – “it’s okay, you can go now”. It stresses me out every single time, but I got my needles on the plane and I didn’t hijack it. Now isn’t that a big win?

In the end, I barely got to the joining-in-the-round part before our return flight, but I’m still very proud of myself for the fact that I’m attempting a fingering weight jumper. Admittedly, the yarn is more of a sports weight, but the weird thing was that I needed muuuch more stitches to get gauge than the pattern describes. Weirder still, my row count was exactly right. So what I’m doing is: I’m knitting a size XXL stitch-count-wise, and a size M row-count-wise. According to my maths, that should turn out right (and so far it does), but isn’t that the craziest thing?

HAND DYED YARNS

Okay so obviously I didn’t have time to dye yarn before today’s shop update. So instead, I’m trying something I’ve always wanted to try, which is dyed-to-order yarns. I’ve listed all bases I’ve dyed on before, and now you can order them and choose the colorway you’d like me to dye on it!

Chain Twenty yarnsBASES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AS DYED-TO-ORDER

On top of that, I received some new bases: two 100% superwash Polwarth bases in fingering- and DK weight. Polwarth is similar to merino, but has a little more shine (so I expect it to drape a little more than merino too). They’re not included in the dyed-to-order series yet, because I still have to see how they dye up. So exciting though! I also named my bases:

  • FUERTE sock: 75% superwash wool + 25% nylon
  • FUERTE DK: 75% superwash wool + 25% nylon
  • GUAPO sock: 100% superwash polwarth
  • GUAPO DK: 100% superwash polwarth
  • SUAVE worsted: 100% superwash merino
  • SUAVE chunky: 100% superwash merino
  • FESTIVO sock: 75% superwash wool + 20% nylon + 5% lurex
  • ELEGANTE dk: 75% superwash merino + 25% tussah silk

FESTIVO is a new sparkly base that I’ll try out soon. I only have one skein of it and might use it for a giveaway, but we’ll see. It looks very promising undyed!

SOCKS

I’m participating in @voolenvine‘s (Kristin’s) Box o’ Sox KAL, even though I’ve never knit a pair of socks before. For those of you who have been living onder a log: the Box o’ Sox KAL is a year long knitalong for which you have to knit at least 12 pairs of socks for yourself, and store them in a designated-for-the-purpose box. I’d love to finish the KAL, but I’d better get my sock knitting game on!

ACQUISITIONS

I had hoped to buy some locally produced or dyed yarn on the Azores, but the truth is: there are no sheep there. Haha! Only cows! A hella lot of cows. However, I did find a yarn shop in Ponta Delgada (the ‘capital city’ on the island of São Miguel) that sold some quality commercial yarns. I went there, couldn’t make up my mind, left, returned the next day, like you do, and bought two balls of a merino-camel blend from a Portuguese brand called Rosários 4. It’s very soft and the color is stunning. I may use it for luxury socks, because I like the idea of always making socks out of souvenir yarn. We’ll see though.

STATISTICS

I’ve sold quite some destash yarn, so hurray for extra space! There’s only some gorgey chunky blend left for those of you interested. Anyway, the destash was to make up for last year’s not-so-good statistics, so I can’t count them as out of stash now. With no FOs, that leaves me with only a +2 in souvenir yarn.

In week 6-9: 2

  • 2x Rosários 4 Camwool

Out week 6-9: 0

In 2018: 3

  • 2x Rosários 4 Camwool
  • 1x Chain Twenty FUERTE DK

Out 2018: 3

  • 3x Drops Paris

PLANS

Really not much has changed since last time. The end is in sight for Norderney, so that one has priority this week. As well as my Spaghetti top (that still needs a proper name), because otherwise I lose track of the design part. Besides, I just hope to be a busy bee dying custom orders! Hope you will all have a great week!
