MAKER UPDATE #13 | THE LA CAFETERÍA COASTERS PATTERN IS FINISHED

So far so good when it comes to the maker routine! After a year of experimenting, with ups and downs, I finally feel like I’ve found the layout of a making schedule that works for both me and the boyfriend. It basically consists of five work days, and four weekend days, the weekend days being reserved for being creative for the sake of it (which is, as you may all know, the engine behind handmade small businesses). Anyway, without boring you with the details, it seems to be the perfect balance between work and off-time, and I also seem to get most of what I wanna do done. Hope it stays this way!

IN HIBERNATION

With regards to the first three projects, I’ve gone in detail about them and why they’re in hibernation last week. I won’t repeat myself here, but wanna keep them in the list because I’m feeling quite overwhelmed with all the projects that are lingering around. It’s just for me to keep track of what projects I need to return to when I get the chance.

SPAGHETTI STRAP TOP > DK SWEATER

I’ve been contemplating this idea for a few weeks now, but let’s make it official: my spaghetti strap top wants to be a sweater. So it’s far from done yet, haha. It wasn’t so much the design btw, it’s the yarn. I definitely still want to design that spaghetti strap top, but it has to be in a more summery fabric like cotton, silk, or cashmere. My FUERTE dk (75% superwash wool + 25% nylon) is just so much more suitable for sweaters. Besides, I’ve had this idea in mind for ages — about how my perfect, basic sweater should look like. It’s about time I gave it a try. Since it’s gonna be a lot bigger than anticipated, I need to dye up more yarn for it. So that’s why it’s in hibernation for now.

FINISHED OBJECTS

LA CAFETERÍA COASTERS PATTERN

Since I’m on a tight budget these days, I’m trying to focus on shop products that only cost me time to make, not money. Patterns are perfect for that, so I typed up my LA CAFETERÍA coasters design. It’s a very simple and quick project, so I made sure to include many step-by-step photos so that it’s perfect for absolute beginner knitters. More experienced knitters may like it too though, especially for gift knitting! A stack of coffee (or tea) coasters is such a lovely and unique (housewarming present), I think. The pattern will be released at the next shop update of April 5th.

HAND DYED YARN

I totally forgot to mention this last week, but I dyed up a custom order skein of Las Palmas on GUAPO sock that turned out to have a knot in there. So I dyed another one for my customer and this one will be in the shop at a discounted price. There’s nothing wrong with the skein whatsoever, so if you’re not too worried about having to weave in two more ends, grab it!

WORKS IN PROGRESS

GUERNSEY WRAP

Gave this knit-purl wrap some more love this week. I’m on my last ball of yarn and I’m just past the half way point, so it will be in hibernation soon too. At the beginning of May, I’ll be in The Netherlands and I’ll make sure to order all the needles and yarn I need to get back to all my hibernating projects.

SEED STITCH SCARF

It’s such a joy to be knitting this. I started it on my days off, as a knitflix kind of project, and I love it. I think seed stitch was my first and will be my forever love. It’s simple, modern, textured, exactly what I’m looking for in a scarf. Hope to finish this before the shop update, otherwise I’ll add it to the shop at the 20th. Also planning on making twenty more. 😉

FUTURE PROJECTS

CHUNKY SWEATER

Since I now only got two WIPs on the go, this project will be cast on soon! It’s really weird to have so many projects around and still cast on another, but in the end, there are just two projects I can really work on and I find that is not enough variation for me. Gotta do some maths and sketching first, but it’s gonna be a simple design, so that should not take too much time.

SOCKS

I don’t know why, but I have one skein of commercial sock yarn in my stash that I wanted to use for my first pair of socks. However, it’s a 50 gram skein, so obviously, I’ll need two. >< I’ll probably add that second skein to my to-get-when-in-The-Netherlands-list and maybe just cast on the first sock before that. We’ll see!

ILLUSTRATIONS

Gotta make tons more illustrations to up my watercolor game! And then I’ll choose the best ones for printing. <3

ACQUISITIONS

None! Good girl.

PLANS

This week is shop update week (like I said, on the 5th), so I’ll probably be busy with that. There’s not gonna be much to add, but I want to take that opportunity to rearrange some products and take new product photos. I also want to plan more knitwear for the shop: more of my current designs (facecloths, headbands, coasters), but also more simple new things like that seed stitch scarf. Right now, the shop looks like I’m a hand dyer haha, which I LOVE to be too, but I started dyeing in the first place to accommodate my own designs and make my knitwear truly unique and ‘my own’. Anyway, I’m rambling. Happy Easter friends, see you (hopefully) next week!
